What is Plantarfasciitis and How Can STAR Help?
by Patti Baylis, PT
The plantar fascia is a thick fibrous band of tissue that runs along the bottom of the foot connecting the heel to the toes. It offers support and structure to the arch of the foot. When this band becomes inflamed it is referred to as plantarfasciitis. This inflammation can result in pain and tenderness.
Causes of Plantarfasciitis
There is no specific cause and often the symptoms are gradual. However, some risk factors include:
- footwear (high heels or poorly structured shoes)
- obesity
- a change in activity levels (both increase and decrease)
- pregnancy
Symptoms of Plantarfasciitis:
- Heel pain
- Pain at the bottom of the foot
- Stiffness in the toes and arch
- Pain that is usually at its worst first thing in the morning or after long periods of sitting or standing
Treatment of Plantarfasciitis:
- Medication (non-steroidal anti-inflammatories)
- Night splint
- Shoe inserts
- Physical Therapy
How STAR Physical Therapy can help with Plantarfasciitis:
After your Physical Therapist completes an initial evaluation and reviews your case they will establish a plan of treatment specific to your issues. Your treatment program may include the following:
- Manual stretches to your foot, toes, and ankle as well as instruction on the proper techniques to stretch the same areas at home.
- Strength and balance exercises since both can be affected by plantarfasciitis.
- Ultrasound, Phonophoresis, or Iontophoresis (The Physical Therapist has specialized skills in utilizing this equipment which is designed to increase circulation, deliver anti-inflammatory medication, and decrease inflammation).
- Taping techniques with special tape to offer support to the plantar fascia
- As you progress with a reduction in pain and improved mobility, you will be progressed with your exercises as tolerated.
Studies have shown that the longer you wait to be treated for this condition the longer it will take for the symptoms to resolve. If you believe that you have this condition, contact the STAR Physical Therapy office closest to you so we can help!
